What’s Going on at Community Futures?

Open House

Community Futures celebrated Small Business Week with its annual Open House on October 23.  Visitors had an opportunity to hear a panel talk about the benefits and challenges of “Buying or Selling a Business.  Panel members included: Jeff Jones – Lawyer/Owner of Jeff Jones and Company; Annie Leblanc – Owner of Bo Bannes Cafe; Lynn Skrlac – Owner of the Port McNeill Flower Shop and Lawrie Garrett – Business Analyst CFMW

The Open House included a door prize, sponsored in part by Pacific Eagle Aviation.  Lawrence Isaac of Alert Bay was the lucky winner of a 1 hour flight for three people.

West Coast Community Adjustment Program (WestCCAP) Funding Announced

West Coast Community Adjustment Program – Deadlines for Applications

The goal of WestCCAP is to encourage long-term, sustainable economic growth in coastal communities affected by changes in salmon fishery.  Projects can include “value-added activities,” “wharf and marina” infrastructure” “eco-tourism,” and “waterfront developments.”  Eligible proponents are incorporated or registered not-for-profit entity. 

The next deadline for Expressions of Interest is December 24, 2009. This will be followed by a January 29, 2010 deadline for detailed proposals.  You will find more information and on-line applications at: http://www.cfislandcoastal.ca/CoastLine/CoastlineHome.html

Six community-based projects are receiving funding under the first disbursement of  WestCCAP, a program administered through Fisheries Legacy Trust.  The six projects are:

  • Malcolm Island Harbour Upgrade and Expansion – Malcolm Island Lions Harbour Authority
  • Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre - Northern Vancouver Island Salmonid Enhancement Association
  • Alert Bay Waterfront Enhancement Project – ‘Namgis First Nation
  • Wharf Repair Project – ‘Namgis First Nation
  • Wiukinuxv Carving Shed  - Wiukiuuxv Economic Development Corporation
  • Coal Harbour Wharf Upgrades - Quatsino Community Society
